Born on 24th October 1618 at Ujjain, Aurangzeb was the third son of Mughal Emperor, Shahjahan. His mother was Mamtaz mahal. In his childhood he acquired scholarship of Arabic & Persian. He was a staunch Sunni and practised his religion by letter and spirit. At the age of 17 he helped his father, Shahjahan to suppress the bundela revolt. Before being a Mughal Emperor, he not only acted as the governor of Deccan but of Gujarat as well from 1645-1647.
In 1657-1658 Aurangzeb won the war of succession by defeating his brother, Dara and by imprisoning Shahjahan. though he captured the throne in 1658, yet his coronation ceremony took place only on June 5,1659.
