Arrest of students: Kashmir’s Central University suspends classwork today, students urge governor to intervene

Srinagar: The central university of Kashmir on Monday suspended classwork for the fear of eruption of protests against the arrest of two varsity students last week.

The students identified as Suhail Ahmad Ahmad Dar of Shopian and Mohammad Ismail Ganie of Baramulla, both 3rd semester students of Political Science department, were picked up by police from their rented room in Nowgam on  Srinagar outskirts.

The university’s PRO Arshid Mehraj confirming the suspension of classwork told Kashmir Reader one among the two students named as Suhail Ahmad Dar was released from the custody on Sunday.

Meanwhile, students rushed to Srinagar’s press colony, which houses offices and residences of local and international media outlets, and staged a protest to press for the release of their counterpart.

The protesting students chanted slogans in favour of release of the arrested student and urged the Governor Satya Pal Malik to intervene so that he is freed and allowed to resume his studies.

“He is innocent. The charges are totally baseless,” said the duo’s classmate Adil Farooq.
